China, Egypt highlight importance of legislative cooperation
Visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo has highlighted the importance of legislative cooperation between China and Egypt, pledging to maintain sustainable and stable exchange cooperation between the two legislative bodies.

Wu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks during his meeting with Egyptian People's Assembly (PA) Speaker Ahmed Sorour late on Monday.

During the talks, Wu said that parliamentary exchanges are important components of the bilateral ties between the two countries and setting up a regular exchange mechanism between NPC and PA can ensure a sustainable and stable cooperation between the two legislative bodies.

Wu hailed the bilateral ties between China and Egypt, saying it is now at the golden development period in the history after Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak successfully visited China in November 2006.

During the visit, Mubarak achieved common grounds with Chinese President Hu Jintao on deepening the Sino-Egyptian strategic and cooperative relations.

China and Egypt, one of the first African and Arab countries which recognized the new China, last year celebrated their 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Wu expressed his appreciation of Egypt's steady support to China on the issue of China's Taiwan, adding that China also supports the developing road chosen by the Egyptian people themselves.

Talking on economic cooperation, Wu called for expanding cooperation sectors of investment, tourist and industry, saying to deepen economic and trade relations is of the common interest of the two nations.

"China positively responds to the suggestion proposed by President Mubarak during his visit to China to strengthen the bilateral cooperation in the fields of infrastructure and human resources training among others and will promote the Sino-Egyptian cooperation on joint projects through the eight steps of assistance announced by Chinese President Hu Jintao," said the Chinese top legislator.

For his part, Sorour welcomed Wu's visit to Egypt and termed the visit as an important event in the history of his People's Assembly, hailing the great achievements of China's internal and external policies.

He also expressed Egypt's willingness to learn China's good experience of development.

After the meeting, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a regular exchange mechanism between China 's NPC and Egypt's PA, marking the new phase of the exchange cooperation between the two legislative bodies.

Wu, who is currently on a four-day official visit to Egypt, also attended an Africa-China business conference and made a keynote speech on ways to strengthen economic cooperation between China and African nations.

Wu is also expected to meet Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Mahmoud Mohamed Nazef and Speaker of the Egyptian Advisory Shura Council Safwat Muhammad Yousuf el-Sharif on Tuesday before wrapping up his visit to Egypt.

Egypt is the first leg of Wu's three-nation tour to Africa and Europe, which will also take him to Hungary and Poland.
