Top publicity official pledges to develop grassroots culture
Top Chinese publicity official Liu Yunshan has pledged to build an integral nationwide system of cultural service to let each member of the public in China share the fruit of cultural development.

"The establishment of a nationwide cultural service is essential to the building of a harmonious and well-off society and to safeguarding the basic interests of the masses," said Liu, head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.

Liu made the remark during a visit to southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from May 2 to 5, which took him to cultural organizations and businesses, villages and urban communities.

"Culture, which is from the masses, should serve the masses," he said, adding local governments should provide more cultural services which is welcomed by the public.

Liu stressed the importance of building grassroots cultural infrastructures such as rural culture centers, which usually contain libraries, small-sized stadiums and theatres, and should be comprehensive and multi-functional in offering education, information, recreation and sports facilities.

Cultural activities, products and services should be "affordable" and "popular" in society so as to enhance the quality of the public's cultural life, Liu added.
