Vice premier: China to beef up telecommunication co-op with ITU
China vowed to beef up cooperation with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) concerning radio frequency and satellite orbit resources and the development of global telecommunication standards.

Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan made the remarks on Tuesday when meeting with visiting ITU Secretary General Hamadoun Toure.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to ITU's important role in global telecommunications, Zeng said, adding the country is ready to expand cooperation with ITU.

He said developing countries have great demand for telecommunications, and need ITU's support and help.

In response, Toure appreciated China's support for ITU over the years, expressing his hope to enhance cooperation with China and further promote the development of global information and communication technologies and bridge digital divide.

ITU, founded in 1865, is a United Nations agency for telecommunications with 191 member states. China joined the ITU in 1920.
