Vice premier urges enhanced precaution against geological disasters
Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan has called for more prevention measures as the country is facing increasing risks of geological disasters in the raining season.

Zeng urged local authorities to carry out emergency plans and conduct accurate geological and weather monitoring and forecast so as to prevent heavy life and property losses.

Since July, torrential rains have caused a large number of geological disasters including mudflows and landslides, leaving more than 90 dead or missing in China.

China would be in a peak season for geological disasters through mid August, he said.

The vice premier added the meteorological authorities forecasted heavy rains to hit China's southwestern region and the eastern part of its northwestern region in the coming days and four to six typhoons to land on the country this year.

Some local authorities have successfully forecasted geological disasters in advance and evacuated residents and their property timely, Zeng said.

The Ministry of Land and Resources has ordered local agencies to issue timely forecasts for possible geological disasters and step up precaution in populous regions, tourist destinations, construction sites and along transport arteries.
