Chinese vice premier Zeng Peiyan has called on engineering consultants and designers nationwide to put safety first in construction projects following a bridge collapse in central China that killed at least 64 people.
Zeng made the remark at the national engineering consulting and design summit forum held on Monday.
"(Engineering consultants and designers) should learn lessons from the accident and put quality and safety first," he stressed to more than 200 attendants of the forum.
"Those who construct, administrate, supervise and design jerry-built projects should be investigated," he said.
Zeng also urged the professionals to use new technologies and products that are environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient.
On Aug. 13, the Dixi Bridge, an unreinforced arch bridge over the Tuojiang River being built in Fenghuang County of Hunan Province, collapsed in seconds, leading to a death toll of 64. An investigation into the cause of the collapse is still ongoing.
China has suspended the building of all unreinforced arch bridges throughout the country and begun a checkup on bridges and tunnels since Aug. 18.
