Chinese top legislature criticizes local government's neglect of economic quality |

China's top legislature has criticized local governments that have blindly sought rapid growth rather than balance and quality of economic development.
The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) made the remark in reviewing the central government's report on implementing the plan of the national economic and social development this year.
"Some local governments still regard a rapid increase of GDP figures alone as a main objective, although they have been aware of the quality of economic development," said members of the NPC Standing Committee.
The members urged the central government to prioritize prevention of economic overheating and adopt proper measures to reduce the number of high resource-consuming pollutant emitting enterprises.
Macro-adjustment measures issued by the central government in the last four years have failed to suppress excessive investment in real estate, which resulted in rapid price rises for housing in major cities.
