Hu and Zuma were meeting on the sidelines of a series of UN meetings.
Relations between China and South Africa have developed steadily since the two nations established diplomatic ties in 1998.
In 2007, Hu paid a state visit to South Africa, which promoted the bilateral strategic partnership formed in the previous year.
Last year, Zuma visited China as head of a delegation of the ruling African National Congress.
