Wang Huaizhong, former deputy governor of east China's Anhui Province, was executed Thursday upon the approval of the Supreme People's Court. He was sentenced to death for taking bribes valued at 5.17 million yuan (623,000 US dollars) from 1994 to 2001 and possessing 4.81 million yuan that he could not tell its source. This is the third Party official at or above ministerial or provincial level put to death for corruption following Hu Changqing and Cheng Kejie since China's reform and opening up started two decades ago. Investigation of Wang's case fully demonstrated the determination and strength of the CPC Central Committee in building clean and honest governments and combating corruption. Wang is a typical example for openly extorting huge amounts of bribes. Most corrupt officials investigated and punished in the past received gifts and took bribes because they could not resist temptations, while Wang not only took bribes amounting to 2.3 million yuan and 10,000 Australian dollars on 16 occasions but also, using his power in hand, actively sought bribes for four times, one of which reaching 2 million yuan. The most shocking and enraging was that the biggest bribe he took aimed to "ingratiate" and thereby obstruct investigations of his problems conducted by related departments. His dirty tricks, and the base nature and bad influence of his case are unprecedented. Failing to give him severe punishment would not suffice it to assuage the indignation of the people and the Party and would be unfavorable to the maintenance of the Party's image. The CPC will never allow the existence of any special members and power for anybody to transcend the Constitutions and laws, and a capital penalty must be given if one's crimes deserve it. Only in this way can the Party organizations be purified, the Party's advanced nature be maintained and its fighting capacity be raised. In his important speech given at the Third Plenary Session of the Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection held from Jan.11-13 in Beijing, General Secretary Hu Jintao said to press ahead with the work of fighting corruption and building clean and honest governments, it is necessary to persist in seeking temporary and permanent solution to the problem of corruption and combining punishment and prevention of corrupt elements; we must continue to seriously investigate and deal with cases of breach of laws and disciplines, it is particularly necessary to resolutely investigate and deal with major and important cases; any corrupt elements, once discovered, will be resolutely punished and must never be indulged and treated soft-heartedly. The investigation and prosecution of Wang's case is a convincing proof the CPC Central Committee's determination to vigorously promote the practical and realistic spirit, and encourage the practice of seeking truth from facts, and to continue the effort to improve the Party's style and to build clean and honest governments and resolutely and effectively carry on the fight against corruption. Facts show that corruption damages productive forces, breaks up cohesion and weakens combating power; if corruption is not eliminated, it would be difficult to carry out reforms, to promote development and gain stability. In face of the downfall of another deputy provincial official, every leading cadre should carefully think over the following questions: For what does one take part in revolution? What should cadres do nowadays? What should they leave behind after death? The case of Wang Huaizhong serves to warn us again that strengthening transformation of our outlook on the world, life and values and establishing a correct outlook on power, position and interest, as well as firmly building an ideological line of defense against corruption and degeneration must not remain empty slogans on our lips. Every leading cadre should earnestly study and practice the "three represents" important thought, conscientiously carry out the requirements of "working for the people, being practical and honest" set forth by General Secretary Hu Jintao, resolutely oppose formalism and bureaucracy, establish a scientific outlook on development and a correct concept on official career achievements. We should work hard, be honest in performing our official duties and take the interests of the overwhelming majority of the people as the starting-point and end-result of all our wok.
