A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Li Changchun, told a meeting held in Xi'an on Monday to commemorate the late Chinese leader Mao Zedong's speech on literature and art, that the country should encourage more masterpieces.
"Sixty-five years ago, Mao's speech closely followed the situation of China and creatively elaborated a series of important issues such as the relationship between the art and people, art and politics and art and life," Li wrote in his greeting to the 60writers from across the country who were meeting to commemorate Mao's 1942 speech.
The meeting was held in Yan'an, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, the same city where Mao gave his famous speech.
In May 1942, Mao organized a forum on literature and art where he made opening and closing speeches highlighting the urgent need for art and literature to serve the people.
Mao had spent several months researching literature and found that many works were not understood by the masses.
"Our literature should serve the public, especially the farmers and workers," stressed the late leader, whose prose and poetry show the skill of a gifted writer.
Mao's two speeches have become a bible for China's art circle and have had far-reaching influence on the party's art policies and the healthy development of art.
Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, wrote in his letter on Monday that Mao's speech set up the Party's policies in guiding art which have been enriched and developed by Mao's successors.
"Art is the torch of a nation's spirit and a clarion pressing people forward," Li wrote, adding "we learn the speech today for art's flourish by allowing various schools of thought and reflecting on the mass's real life and feelings.
