Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong has called on local governments to fully implement the scientific concept of development and combine the central government's demand for both fast and healthy economic growth with local situations.
Zeng made the remarks during an inspection tour in southwest China's Guizhou Province from Jan. 26 to 30.
Zeng, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, urged local governments to achieve progress in adjusting economic structures and changing the mode of economic development.
He stressed that environmental protection should be put in an equal important place as development and construction.
He visited seven local villages inhabited by the Miao, Buyi and Han ethnic groups to get first-hand information about the progress made in building the Socialistic New Countryside.
Development is the top task for realizing the 'New Countryside' and the key issue is increasing the farmers' incomes, he said.
Zeng also urged local governments to intensify financial supports to those remote mountainous areas, ethnic-inhabited areas and areas plagued by endemic diseases.
