Chinese top legislator meets ROK National Assembly deputy speaker

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, met in Beijing Saturday afternoon with Lee Yong Hee, deputy speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (ROK).

Wu reviewed the achievements of the regular meeting between China and ROK legislators -- co-chaired by Lee and his Chinese counterpart Uyunqimg on Friday -- saying he was glad the two sides had an opportunity to exchange views on governance and enhance mutual understanding and trust.

He noted that the China-ROK relationship has grown strongly since the two countries established diplomatic ties 15 years ago, saying this was in the fundamental interests of both peoples and in line with the trend of world development.

Lee praised China's domestic policy of building a harmonious society, featuring people first and sustainable development, saying the policy not only favors China's development but also contributes to world peace and development.

He said the ROK side attaches great importance to developing relations with the NPC and is ready to deepen bilateral exchanges through instances such as the regular exchange mechanism.

Lee also met with Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan Friday afternoon, exchanging views with the senior Chinese diplomat on bilateral relations and issues of common concern such as the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.

Around 20 legislators from China and ROK attended the regular meeting on Friday, the second of its kind since the NPC and the ROK National Assembly forged a regular exchange mechanism last year to develop stronger parliamentary links. Their first meeting was held in Seoul last September.
