Senior leader sounds clarion call in fight against corruption
Wu Guanzheng, the top discipline official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), underlined the importance of the fight against corruption and the need for clean government during his inspection tour of Shaanxi Province.

Wu, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, visited firms, villages and construction sites in the province from June 9-11.

The senior Party official, who is also secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, said "the fight against corruption implies being able to cope with new situations and to solve new problems."

He urged discipline inspection departments to intensify investigation and research.

He called on local officials to carefully analyse typical corruption cases and pay more attention to the prevention of corruption.

"We need to boost education, management and supervision of party members and cadres," Wu said, referring to recently-released regulations that took effect on May 30 banning officials from taking advantage of their power for unlawful gain.

In May, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) urged officials who have traded power for money to confess their misconduct before the end of June or else face severe punishment when their misdeeds are discovered.

Wu called on local governments to implement the regulations scrupulously and said local officials should examine their own conduct in light of the regulations.

"Officials need a clear understanding of rights and interests," he said, emphasizing that "officials exercise their power on behalf of the people and should never make use of their power for unlawful profits."
