CPC full of vigor and vitality
By the end of 2006, the membership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) had amounted to 72.391 million, a net increase of 1.581 million over the previous year, as indicated by the national inner-Party statistical figures available, People's Daily reporter Dong Hongjun reports from the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee.

Judging from the relevant statistical figures, the coverage of Party organizations has kept extending with their growing attractiveness and cohesiveness and more rational structure of new CPC membership and supplemented with new fresh blood, and Party organizations and CPC member ranks have been filled with vigor and vitality after the conclusion of the education of strengthening ideals and beliefs on the building of the advanced character of the Party.

In view of age groups of the CPC members, there has been a somewhat increase with the ranks of Party members under age 35, as indicated by statistics on the composition of CPC members. Till the end of 2006, there were 16.919 million Party members under age 35, and it ratio to the total Party membership rose by 0.4 percent over the preceding year. In term of gender ratio and record of education, there has been a marked rise with the number of female members and the CPC members of or above the junior college level. The number of female Party members reached 14.292 million, 19.7 percent of the total CPC membership, or a 0.5 percent rise over the previous year, and those of or above the junior college level totaled 22.19 million, accounting for 30.7 percent of the total CPC membership, or a rise of 1.7 percent over the previous year. All these figures indicate the mix of the Party member ranks has been optimized with improved qualifications.

Relevant statistics show that 2.635 million people joined the CPC in 2006, an increase of 160,000 people over the preceding year with an increase range of 6.5 percent over the previous year. In term of occupation, the increase range of students is most evident, and 126, 000 more students joined the Party than in the previous year. Furthermore, 1.323 million people from the production and work frontline were admitted into the Party, or 90,000 more than in 2005. Meanwhile, 19.073 million people applied for CPC membership nationwide in 2006. 1.213 million more applicants than in 2005, with an increase range of 6.8 percent over 2005.

By the end of 2006, there had been 3.564 million grassroots CPC organizations, 44,000 more than in 2005, including 173,000 Party Committees at the basic level, 215,000 general Party branches and 3.176 million grassroots Party branches. What is particular worth mentioning is that out of 2.419 million non-public economic sector enterprises, 178,000 such enterprises have set up CPC organizations, making up 94.2 percent of the enterprises with conditions available for the institution of Party organizations.

Thanks to the education of enhancing ideals and beliefs throughout the CPC, the building of the advanced character of the Party, according to Party-building experts, has embarked on the more systematic and regular track with obvious enhanced cohesiveness and combat effectiveness.
