Chinese gov't earmarks 60 mln yuan for farm production in flood-battered areas
The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture have allocated more than 60 million yuan (7.9 million U.S. dollars) for farm production in the country's flood-stricken areas.

The Ministry of Agriculture also called for large seed companies and local governments to donate seeds and fish fries to flooded regions, said sources with the ministry.

Sun Zhengcai, minister of agriculture, has called for more efforts to ensure the harvest of autumn crops as about half of the country is faced with severe flooding.

In southwest China's Chongqing Municipality and east China's Shangdong Province, continued heavy rainstorms and floods have affected 6.8 million people and 192,500 hectares of farmland and caused more than four billion yuan (about 526 million U.S. dollars) in financial losses.

Rains that have raged in Huaihe River areas during the past few days have flooded another 133,000 hectares of land, bringing the total flooded area to 254,000 hectares.

More than one million people have been evacuated in Henan, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces from the projected path of floodwaters from the Huaihe River, which is expected to see its worst flooding since 1954.

The middle and lower reaches of the Huaihe River, China's thirdl ongest, faces severe flood-control challenge as the water level might remain dangerously high for at least another 10 days.

Heavy rain or torrential rains will hit eastern part of southwest China, Huaihe River areas and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in the next three days, the China Meteorological Administration forecast on Saturday.
