Vice President lauds Inner Mongolia achievement
Chinese vice president Zeng Qinghong on Wednesday lauded the achievement of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and expressed hope that the region could "explore new ways in improving ethnic autonomy".

"Inner Mongolia's great achievement symbolizes victories of the Communist Party of China (CPC)'s ethnic policy," said Zeng while visiting an exhibition on the region's development over the past six decades.

The region, the first of five province-level autonomous regions established in China, celebrated its 60th anniversary on Wednesday in the regional capital Hohhot.

The Party's ethnic policies generated the prosperity and harmony of the region, said Zeng.

Under the CPC leadership Inner Mongolia has enjoyed economic prosperity since its founding in Ulanhot on May 1, 1947, said Zeng, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC.

With an area of 1.18 million square kilometers, Inner Mongolia covers 12 percent of China's territory and is the third biggest of the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities on the Chinese mainland.

Inner Mongolia had 55 ethnic groups including the majority Han. Its population stood at 23.92 million at the end of 2006, 4.23 million of whom were ethnic Mongolians.
